NY Giants 2012 Parade Info

New York City will host a ticker-tape parade in honor of the Super Bowl XLVI Champions New York Giants on Tuesday, February 7th, 2012.  The parade will begin at Battery Place and Washington Street at 11:00 AM and continue northbound up the Canyon of Heroes to Worth Street. The parade will be followed by a ceremony at City Hall Plaza, at which the Mayor will present the NY Giants with Keys to the City.

“Big Blue gave us a game to remember, and on Tuesday we’re going to give them a parade to remember,” said Mayor Bloomberg.

While the sidewalks lining Tuesday’s tickertape parade up the Canyon of Heroes along Broadway from the Battery to City Hall are open to all members of the public, there is limited space on City Hall Plaza for the ceremony with the Giants players and owners.  The City will set up three large screens around City Hall for members of the public to watch the ceremony.  In addition to tickets for Giants friends and family, additional tickets for seats on City Hall Plaza will be distributed to the public by Members of the City Council and other City elected officials, community organizations that work in partnership with the Mayor’s Community Affairs Unit in all five boroughs, City and State agencies, and municipal unions.

There have been reports in the past of fraudulent offers for tickets to the parade – including access to floats – and to the ceremony. There are no tickets or passes to any portion of the parade, and any such offers are fake. Ceremony tickets are not for resale. If you are aware of any tickets or passes being sold, please call 311.

Panhandling in NYC

Panhandling on the subway platforms and on the trains of NYC is illegal, but on a given day during my commute to and from work – you can be sure to see someone asking for spare change.   The sad part is we see this so often – that we’re numb and often times turn a deaf ear and a blind eye to those around us that are less fortunate.

In a recent news conference by Bloomberg, he said, “There aren’t very many panhadlers left, in all fairness to the MTA”.  If that is the case, I really do wonder what city the mayor is living in – because it’s a very different city then the one I and 8 million other New Yorkers live in.

In fact, in my latest observation – things seem to have only gotten worse.  Recently on the subway platform of 53rd and Lexington, I saw a woman in mid 40s sitting on the floor of the platform begging for money.   The most disturbing part of that picture was her son – who seemingly looked like he was 5-6 years old doing his homework assignment on the dirty subway platform in horrible lighting sitting next to her.  She also carried daughter who didn’t look anything over 6 months sleeping in a sling that she put on her shoulders.  I felt bad for this woman.  I didn’t know her story.  I didn’t know how and why she’s in the position she was in – but my heart broke into a million pieces for her.  A parent’s worst nightmare is not be able to provide the basic necessity for their kids.  It was probably 7pm in the evening on a weekday.  Her kids should’ve been home doing homework, and being “kids”.  I dug into my wallet – found a $5 bill and placed this in this woman’s hand.  It isn’t much – but hopefully the little bit of cash can contribute to these kids having a warm meal in their tummy and hopefully a warm bed to sleep for that night.

So let me ask you Bloomberg – if we can’t even protect our children and give them the most basic elements they need to just survive – how can we say – it has gotten better?

SuperBowl – commercials

If the Superbowl isn’t one of the most watched televised show of the year, I don’t know what is.  9 out of the 10 people you’ll talk to today would have told you they watched the game last night – and yes – even the ones who know nothing about football.

And in the age of DVRs – the SuperBowl is a marketer’s dream.  It is one event where people don’t take pee breaks and look forward to the commercials as much as they look forward to the game itself.

Here are some of our thoughts on some of the highlights.

– David Beckham’s H&M commercial where you see 30 seconds of tattooed muscle toned body of David Beckham.  While this commercial fell on the top hated commercials on many sites, as a woman, I can probably keep watching this again and again.  If sex sells for men, why can’t the reverse hold true?  Afterall, it’s probably the women who’s shopping for the men anyways.  Hit the replay button for us someone.

– The GoDaddy commercial was annoying as usual.  What do you really expect?  it was predictable as usual, but one thing they were good at was leaving the viewers wanting for more, and actually driving the users to the actual site to see if – well.. you saw the commercial – you know what they wanted to see.

– The Bridgestone Performance Tires commercial was cute, funny, and definitely under-rated.  I’ll watch this one again.

All in all, we watched the commercials (and the game), but overall, while there was a collective chuckle here and a mild guffaw there – the spots left me wondering is this all the marketers got?  What happened to all those rule-breaking, risk taking ideas we had a few years ago?  Why did they all decide to play it “safe”?

Your thoughts?
